Exposed Brick Wall Kitchen

“Reconfiguring your layout could enable your home to support the life you want to live”

Rebecca Alexander, Creative Director

An insight into Thistle & Wild Design’s Creative Director’s own home :

Brief: As part of a full house renovation project, the brief was to reconfigure the ground floor layout from a series of closed off rooms to a more fluid plan to meet the needs of family life including relocating the kitchen from the back of the house to a more central position within the home.

Design a dual aspect light filled, sociable kitchen with lots of storage, exposed brickwork and finishes which would not necessarily be associated with a kitchen.

A working inspiration board, gathering ideas to meet the brief. This was refined into an inspiration board including tactile samples..

Delivered: A light filled kitchen in the centre of the home. Removing a huge chimney breast allowed for a bank of tall storage cupboards and a large island with generous circulation space around it.

Two social seating areas were incorporated into the design; built-in bench seating by a large sash window overlooking the garden and bar stools at the island.

Exposed steels, quartz worktops and concrete pendant lights are softened by the warm tones in the exposed brick wall, the handmade door and drawer handles designed by Thistle & Wild Design in collaboration with Chocolate Creative, a tonal colour palette, artwork and a sumptuous bench seat cushion designed and made by Thistle & Wild Design.

Top Tip: Give yourself plenty of time to think about what kind of lighting you need and would like. Don’t go down the recessed spot light route unless it’s right for your space. In this kitchen the ceiling height is over 3 meters with original Victorian coving in place. It would have been a crime to add recessed spotlights to such a beautiful space!

BEFORE photos below. A closed off and under used dining room was redesigned to become and an open plan family kitchen in the heart of the home.
