Spatial Design describes something magical.
Re-configuring your floor plan or re-purposing your space, to create a more harmonious way of living, which supports the life you want to live, is perhaps the most impactful change you can make to your home ~ without extending.
We begin with a relaxed consultation & it’s during this time that I gather a clear understanding & vision for how you want your home to flow, feel, look & function.
I work with clients, in person or remotely, on one room in their home to full house projects, as two clients describe below:
From one room..
A lovely family of 4 had become a family of 6 & they needed a long term bedroom solution for their two babies.
Their minds were filled with multiple options, including moving house, or moving their older children out of their bedrooms.
During the consultation I listened to all they needed & walked around their home. I found a solution which met all their needs & importantly didn’t require their older children to move out of their bedrooms. With a thoughtful, considered design, I zoned their open plan renovated loft to create two distinct areas. By introducing a custom joinery room divider and paint colours to give each area its own identity, plus plug in lighting & a rug, it changed from an open plan loft into a dual purpose room including their special nursery.
To a whole house:
A family of 4 had moved from a smaller terrace to a larger house. They had a fantastic list of what they needed from the house including a place to record music, accessible guitar storage, a guest room, a master ensuite, a new kitchen & a new bedroom for their son. They didn’t know how to make the house work for them, if there would be space for an ensuite or how to tackle the current confusing layout. During the Consultation, I listened & toured the house. I guided them & we mapped out a plan for their home. I think the testimonial speaks for itself.

As with all Thistle & Wild Design services, this is tailored to your needs & your home.
+ We begin with a relaxed consultation to find out what isn’t working for you & how we can make your home flow & work in the way you need it to. We walk around your home, or spend time in the room/s that you plan to work on, to gain a greater understanding of the current layout, see its potential and to appreciate the aspect, so we’re working with, and not against, the natural light.
+ The consultation is always such a valuable opportunity to talk through your project & it's during these conversations that ideas start to form & I can get to the heart of what you’d love & need. By the end of the visit, I have a clear understanding of your design brief.
+ Back in the studio, I reflect on our conversations and write your project document which includes your design brief, a fee proposal and an estimated timescale for your project.
+ Take time to consider the project document; this is a good opportunity to make sure the design brief captures everything you need.
+ If you would like to go ahead, you’ll receive a request for 70% payment, payable before design work commences. The balance is due following the proposal presentation.
+ In the studio, I create a Concept Board, which captures your home’s potential and helps you visualise the proposed design, 2D pdf scaled black and white floor plan/s or room plan/s plus anything else which was agreed during, or following, your consultation for example a lighting plan & specification or a furniture placement plan.
+ We’ll come together in person, or online, and I’ll walk you through the design proposal to help you visualise yourself in your home. We can tweak the design if needed.
+ Once work is complete, and the balance has been received, you’ll receive the proposal by email for you to self implement or share and discuss with your builder.
Other things to note:
+ The consultation takes place in your home if you live within approx. 20 minutes drive from M14 Manchester. If you live further afield and you have floor plans, videos and photographs of your home which you’re happy to send, we can hold the consultation online via google meet.
+ An in-person consultation finishes with a site survey during which I take measurements and photographs.
+ If your proposal includes structural changes, your builder will bring a structural engineer on board.

Often families are frustrated by the layout of their home & feel it works against how they want their home to flow.
+ Is the configuration of the rooms in your house working against how you and your family want to live?
+ Are there too many individual rooms keeping you all apart?
+ Or is it too open plan without the interior design in place to help soak up all the sound of a busy home?
+ Is it the overall floor-plan or just one room which you’d like help with?
+ Do you need to find an area in your home to work from so you don’t feel you’re ‘living at work’?
+ Do you need an extra bed for a new member of the family?
+ Or more living space now the kids are teenagers?
+ Is it an inherited lighting plan rather than the layout that is the problem? Too dark? Too bright? Don’t have lights where you need them?
+ Does your home make the most of its aspect? Do you find yourself chasing the sun; wanting to make the most of the sunlight but find your layout or furniture plan makes this difficult?
+ Is it a combination of multiple elements?
+ Maybe you’re considering an open plan, or semi-open plan layout? I'll talk you through how to make it work for you and family life and the important details to bear in mind before the walls come down. We can look at everything from sight lines to storage to lighting plans.

Of course
Sometimes, rather than the overall floor plan, it comes down to one room & the different needs of all who use it.
As an example, a family I worked with; one client loves to knit in the evening & the family as a whole love to watch films together. Considering the arrangement of furniture & a layered lighting plan was what this family needed to make the room a relaxing, comfy & happy place they all wanted to spend time in together. -
